This past month, I had the incredible honor of attending a milestone celebration: 30 years of Friends of Laphroaig, a global community that shares the love for one of Scotland’s most iconic distilleries. As someone deeply passionate about whiskey and the communities it builds, this experience was more than just a celebration—it was a homecoming to everything I value in this industry.

Laphroaig has always had a special place in my heart. It’s not just the distinctive, smoky, peaty flavor that sets it apart; it’s the heritage, the storytelling, and most importantly, the sense of belonging that the distillery fosters among its fans.

When I received the invitation to join this exclusive celebration, I knew it would be a memory I’d cherish for years. Laphroaig’s dedication to its “Friends” isn’t merely a marketing initiative. It’s an ethos that has stood the test of time, spanning generations of whiskey lovers who have come together not just to drink but to share stories, traditions, and a love for this remarkable brand.

A Celebration Rooted in History and Tradition

The event, held at Governors Island in NY, semi transformed into “Islay” felt like stepping back in time. Tents and seated areas build around campfire, a warm feeling of “Home” and “community” gathering together. There were Laphroaig based cocktails served and a large screen was playing humorous quotes about Laphroaig and it’s distinct flavor.

I also had the privilege of interacting with fellow Friends of Laphroaig, an eclectic and vibrant community that spans the globe. Each of us, from whisky enthusiasts to industry insiders, shared not just a love for the spirit but also a deep respect for what Laphroaig represents: authenticity, boldness, and community.

The Power of Community in Whiskey

What struck me most about the event was how Laphroaig has managed to build such a loyal following over the past 30 years. It’s not every day that a brand cultivates such deep emotional connections with its audience, but Laphroaig has achieved that through the Friends of Laphroaig program, which continues to thrive. This program isn’t just about the whiskey; it’s about the friendships, the stories, and the shared moments that happen over a glass of Laphroaig.

As someone who also runs whiskey clubs and engages with private tastings, I understand firsthand the importance of building and maintaining a community. It’s a lesson Laphroaig has exemplified over the past three decades: when you create something meaningful, people want to be part of it.

Reflecting on 30 Years, and Looking Forward

Attending this celebration gave me the opportunity to reflect on the past two years of my journey with Redhead Whiskey and the incredible whiskey communities I’ve been fortunate to cultivate. Just as Laphroaig has remained true to its roots while evolving, I see a future where whiskey continues to connect people across the globe.

As I returned from the event, inspired and energized, I look forward to continuing this tradition of bringing people together—whether through my whiskey clubs, private tastings, or future events. The lesson I take away from Laphroaig’s 30-year celebration is that community is key, and it’s something that takes years of dedication, authenticity, and passion to build.

A huge thank you to the Laphroaig team for such a memorable event, and to the Friends of Laphroaig for welcoming me into this remarkable community. Here’s to another 30 years of friendship, storytelling, and, of course, exceptional whiskey.
